How to Make a Homepage

Here is the process that you should follow to create and upload web pages to the BrightNet web server:

  1. Write the HTML file.

  2. Transfer it to your personal public_html directory on our web server.

  3. Send E-mail to letting us know that you have your home page on the server.

Specific details on the process:

WRITE THE HTML FILE
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) files are simple ASCII files, and they resemble old-time word processor files with "embedded" codes. Many resources exist on the net to teach you how to write HTML. A good place to start is to go to Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com), then go to Computers and Internet/Internet/World Wide Web.

A relatively old but simple program to allow beginners to write simple web pages is WebWizard for Windows. To download the WebWizard, click here.

Once you become more proficient with HTML, you will want a more capable tool. HTML Writer is an excellent (again, older) Windows-based HTML editor. Download HTML Writer by clicking here. Microsoft FrontPage (or FrontPage Express) is also good for creating your site.

TIP: You can examine the HTML file for any web page by choosing view source from the browser menu. That way you can see how other people use HTML. You can test your file or files by using your browser. Click "File" from the browser menu, then "Open". NOTE: While working in the PC environment, all files should be .html files. If you are creating multiple files that link to each other, go ahead and write your links for 'whatever.html'.

By the way, most people name their main file "index.html". This works sort of the same way that "autoexec.bat" does on a hard drive. When someone uses their web browser to look into your personal directory, the program looks around for a file called "index.html" and then runs it. If such a file does not exist, the browser displays the contents of the directory. So unless you want strangers examining all your files, use "index.html".

PUT THE FILE(S) IN YOUR PERSONAL PUBLIC_HTML DIRECTORY ON OUR SERVER
The easiest way to do this is to use the WSFTP program or CuteFTP provided on the BrightNet CD.

The Host Name should be ftp.brightok.net in the FTP program you are using. Make sure the box for Anonymous Login is NOT checked.

In the USER ID field, put your BrightNet Oklahoma user name (NOT your email address). In the PASSWORD field, put your BrightNet Oklahoma password. Under Initial Directories/Remote Host, type "public_html" (minus the quote marks). Connect to the server. You will be connected to your personal public_html directory on our web server.

If your index file is shown as "index.htm" you will want to rename it as index.html. Your site is now on the Internet. It can be accessed at www.brightok.net/~yourusername
